Artist's Description

I took the basic composition of Edvard Munch's very famous painting and widened it somewhat to put a figure in the background. I turned the figure in the foreground into a girl (instead of a boy).

The little girl has blonde hair and she is screaming. As suggested, she is screaming because she has been given the silent treatment. For those of you who are not in "the know", the silent treatment is abuse. When children are given the silent treatment by a parent it does untold damage, and at least a quarter of those children end up committing suicide. In a way, this painting is a protest and a call to awareness about this particular form of child abuse.

The original painting went with a blog post about the silent treatment: http://angry-alcoholics.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-silent-treatment.html

About Lise Winne

Lise Winne

I have a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and a masters degree in Art Education. I used to be an art teacher and taught grades K - 12. In order to teach art in the public schools, I needed to learn a lot of mediums. I have carried this into my art studio as well, painting in one area of the studio and making altered digital photographs in another part of the studio. My primary mediums are painting, drawing, digital art, illustrations, cartoons, hand thrown pottery and relief sculpture. If you see pottery in my photographic work, it is my own hand-thrown piece. I have shown my work in galleries and through juried shows at art centers and museums. Some notables include The Delaware Art Museum, Haverford Center of the Arts,...
