Artist's Description

This is from a colored pencil and ink sketch on bristol board.

My intention was to try something light, airy and somewhat floral with firebirds and roses together. Generally I make firebirds with dark night backgrounds, so I wanted to see what they would look like with a whiter background.

I started the firebird series in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. The firebird seemed to be apt for the times with wildfires on the west coast, the virus moving like a raging fire through the country, towns and cities ...

The thing about the firebird is that it is a transcendental bird in that it practically re-incarnates. Legend has it that if you see a firebird, or dream of one, it is a healing bird. It is supposed to remind you that you can rise again. In mythology, it is a wise bird too, and healing can sometimes bring you to wisdom.

There are a limited number of products because the drawing is small and I wasn't sure how it would translate when enlarged...

About Lise Winne

Lise Winne

I have a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and a masters degree in Art Education. I used to be an art teacher and taught grades K - 12. In order to teach art in the public schools, I needed to learn a lot of mediums. I have carried this into my art studio as well, painting in one area of the studio and making altered digital photographs in another part of the studio. My primary mediums are painting, drawing, digital art, illustrations, cartoons, hand thrown pottery and relief sculpture. If you see pottery in my photographic work, it is my own hand-thrown piece. I have shown my work in galleries and through juried shows at art centers and museums. Some notables include The Delaware Art Museum, Haverford Center of the Arts,...
