This pair of birds is part of my Exotic Bird Series of paintings that I started in 2010. Most of the series are done in watercolor paints, and they are from my own imagination (i.e. without props or references). The point of painting from the imagination is that the paintings tend to reflect more of your true essence, your spirit. Birds and other creatures with wings have always been my favorite creature to paint, perhaps because of the yearning to be free, to live above the fray in an enlightened way, and to live an authentic life, something that a lot of us can relate to.
This version of these two birds with the writing was primarily to portray the dance of the sexes, and to use as greeting cards and anniversary presents (and sometimes wedding presents as well). It has been a popular design that gets a chuckle.
I have a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and a masters degree in Art Education. I used to be an art teacher and taught grades K - 12. In order to teach art in the public schools, I needed to learn a lot of mediums. I have carried this into my art studio as well, painting in one area of the studio and making altered digital photographs in another part of the studio. My primary mediums are painting, drawing, digital art, illustrations, cartoons, hand thrown pottery and relief sculpture. If you see pottery in my photographic work, it is my own hand-thrown piece.
